ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday emphasized the need for investor-friendly policies and operational reforms in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

During a high-level meeting in Islamabad, attended by officials from the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the Board of Investment (BOI), and the Ministry of Planning, Iqbal highlighted the importance of prioritizing existing SEZs over new developments. He urged the provision of basic infrastructure like electricity and water and aligning technology zone rules with those of SEZs for improved efficiency.

Iqbal stressed adopting lessons from countries like China, Vietnam, and Turkey, citing political stability, policy continuity, and economic reforms as critical for Pakistan’s development. He called for immediate facilitation of Chinese solar companies in energy projects for Gilgit-Baltistan and directed authorities to develop a robust action plan to accelerate SEZ population growth.

Describing the next 23 years as crucial for Pakistan to compete globally, the minister emphasized the need for a long-term commitment to reforms and consistent economic policies.
