ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting was held in Islamabad to accelerate the installation of a 100 MW solar power plant in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), addressing the region’s critical energy shortages. Key officials including Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan and senior representatives from the Ministries of Planning and Energy, participated in the discussions.

The meeting emphasized the urgency of the project, citing the region’s severe electricity crisis, with 18-hour daily power outages causing significant disruptions to residents and hindering investment opportunities. Solar energy was highlighted as a practical and efficient off-grid solution for GB's unique geographical challenges.

Officials directed the Power Division to prioritize solar energy development, adopt a transparent bidding process, and finalize a detailed implementation timeline. It was decided that the project would be included in the PC-1 document, ensuring alignment with national development priorities.

The successful early completion of the 16 MW Naltar Hydropower Project was recognized as a positive step in addressing GB's energy challenges, with officials calling for similar efficiency in implementing upcoming initiatives. A comprehensive strategy was outlined to fast-track ongoing energy projects under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP), reinforcing the government’s commitment to resolving the region's energy crisis.

This solar project is expected to significantly improve electricity access in Gilgit-Baltistan, providing much-needed relief to the local population and boosting the region's economic potential.
