ISLAMABAD: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has recommended the “Construction of 84 MW Gorkin Matiltan HPP (Revised)” project to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for consideration.

The energy project aims to harness the power of the Ushu River in District Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, contributing to the country’s energy security and sustainable development.

The project’s objective is to construct an 84 MW run-of-the-river hydro power project on the right bank of the Ushu River. With an annual energy generation of approximately 346 GWh, this project offers cheaper and renewable energy. Additionally, a 40 km 220/132 KV transmission line will connect Matiltan HPP to the existing Daral Khwar HPP, ensuring seamless energy transfer.

Financing for the project is a blend of provincial and local resources. The provincial government will contribute 20% of the project cost through its Annual Development Program (ADP), demonstrating commitment to sustainable energy development. The remaining 80% will come from the KP Hydel Development Fund, which plays a crucial role in supporting hydroelectric projects across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The scope of work includes preliminary surveys, geotechnical investigations, and environmental impact assessments. Civil works involve constructing the powerhouse, dam, and other infrastructure elements. Installation of hydro-mechanical equipment, including turbines and generators, will maximize energy output. High-quality electrical systems, such as transformers and switchgear, ensure reliable power transmission.

The economic impact of this project is significant. It will create jobs during construction and operation, stimulating the local economy.
