ISLAMABAD: In Pakistan, the ongoing monsoon season has claimed 320 lives and left nearly 600 injured, according to the latest figures from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), released on Tuesday.
The recent surge in fatalities comes after 24 hours of intense weather, where flash floods, landslides, and collapsing roofs resulted in ten deaths and seven injuries. The NDMA’s report highlights the severe impact of this year’s monsoon, which began on July 1.
Children have been particularly affected, with 162 among the dead and 217 among the injured. Women have also borne a heavy toll, with 49 fatalities and 150 injuries reported. The hardest-hit region is Punjab province, which has recorded 116 deaths and 307 injuries, followed closely by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 96 deaths and 133 injuries.
Beyond the human cost, the monsoon rains have inflicted widespread damage on property and livestock. Across the country, 1,197 animals have perished, and 23,870 homes have been damaged, with 3,317 completely destroyed.
As the monsoon season continues, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in various parts of the country in the next 24 hours, raising concerns about additional casualties and damage. The authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as the heavy rains persist.
